Why The Olfactory doesn't like sales *How Grinchy!*

Thoughts on society's sales-culture from Micki @ The Olfactory...

Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Cyber Week, Boxing Day, Boxing Week... tis the season for mega sales! This can be exciting as a consumer but it can also get a bit overwhelming; don't you think? Do you ever feel like you are over-consuming during the holidays just because you "can't afford not to"?!

Maybe you get this too, but often when I'm surrounded by sales, I am grossly turned-off of shopping altogether. Don't get me wrong, when my dishwasher broke this year, you bet I was scouring the web for the best bargain. But I'm being honest when I say that I love buying the extra bits and bobs of life (like essential oils) in a slower, more mindful way. Taking my time to really make sure I want this item in my life or that it's the perfect gift for someone because they will love it and use it.  

When I started The Olfactory, many business savvy folk gave me the advice to inflate my prices so that I have room to offer constant promotions. I thought long and hard about the business I am building and decided, while this is sound advice and very commonly practiced, it's not for me and I don't want it for you, my customer. That's why on Black Friday I posted an Instagram about being anti-Black Friday

As mentioned in the post, I'm not trying to bash the companies that are having discounts, because every company is different.  I just hoped to explain to you why you won't see any mega door crashers or price slashers around these parts. My goods are priced fairly for you and me! 

I guess to put it simply, as a consumer, I want to know that I can buy what I need, when I need it and not have to wait for the sale. I want goods priced appropriately and I don't want a shop owner to have to lose out on profits that help them stay in business. 

That's why I'm taking a different approach that aligns with the values that The Olfactory operates on. I sell my oils online so I can keep certain overhead costs down, I keep the product line small so that I only sell what you want and price products in a way that enables you to buy them when you need them. Win-win! 

While you won't see big sales around here, I will offer promos where we give extra profits to charities like, Malala Fund and the Cambodian Self-Help Demining Team. Because that's part of why I do business - so that you and I can do good too. <3
